Learner-to-Educator Ratio and its Impact on the Quality of Education in South African Primary Schools - Thesis Example Though the number of educators has also increased but not at the rate desired to keep pace with student enrolment. Presently there are some 400,000 teachers employed in primary schools. The success of the primary school system is judged by academic performance based mainly on the level of passes in the systemic evaluations that take place in Grade 3 and 6. A great majority of learners scored at the ‘non-achieved’ level (lower than 40% overall) with 41% in natural sciences, 38% in languages and some 27% in mathematics. Only 31% in natural sciences, 28% in languages and 12% in mathematics were functioning at or above the required grade 6 level (scores above 50%) and outstanding (scores over 70%) combined (Bulunga, Daniel, Southall, Lutchman (2006). With the increasing number of learners entering primary school and the low rate of increase of the number of educators it is prudent to note that the disparity between the two will eventually become large and its effects far reaching. As one of the determinants of academic performance the learner-to-educator ratio defined as the average number of pupils per educator at a particular level of education in a given school year becomes important to the delivery of high educational standards. Otaku Positive Effect On The Japanese Culture Media Essay I believe otaku are a new breed born in the 20th century visual culture era. In other words, otaku are people with a viewpoint based on an extremely evolved sensitivity toward images. Toshio Okada, Introduction to Otakuology Otaku is one of Japanese popular cultures. The term otaku is used in the Japanese environment to refer to someone who is an extremely obsessive fan of something. It is a person that is devoted to something anime, manga, movies, music, computer gadgets, computer games, and other fields of interest. Literally, it means your home or you in formal terms. However, these meanings are from my point of view not an otaku, nor an otaku expert what is otaku really all about? In this research paper, many aspects of otaku will be discussed: Its history as well as the effect of otaku on the Japanese culture, economy and even around the world. Most importantly, the paper is also going to discuss the negative connotation of this term which was rampant in Japan in the late 80s. Even though negative image of the otaku still exist in the Japanese society today, the otaku has many positive effects in the Japanese culture, the economy and the promotion of Japanese art and culture around the world. History of the Otaku The Otaku is very rampant today in international countries like US and Taiwan. It is a term that has many different meanings, interpretations, positive and negative connotations for every society. In the The Origins of Otaku, it was discussed that many accounts have been vaguely consistent with how the term otaku was associated with anime and manga fans. Also, it was reported that Journalist Akio Nakamori was the first person to publicly write about otaku as related to strange and obsessive fans. Nakamori said that these fans called each other otaku which he believes to be an extremely formal way of saying you (Eng). William Gibson calls otaku passionate obsessive(s). Volker Grassmuck describes them as information fetishists. Lawrence Eng defined it to be Self-defined cyborgs. All of the definitions fall down to the term obssession. Many authors tried to define Otaku more specifically. Here are some of the definitions, Rebecca Scudder reported that there are different otaku subcultures, ranging from people devoting themselves to anime, manga, computer games, movies, radio, and other fields of interest(1). The culture has however continued to spread wide within the country and even internationally. Also, she said that in the US, otaku means the popular subculture that is devoted to anime and manga (1). Lawrence Eng noted that there are some Otaku, who use the term as a reference to themselves or their friends in a humorous manner. This group makes effort to reclaim the term from negative association. Most Japanese would be reluctant to be referred to by this term especially in serious circumstances (Scudder, 2). Karl Taro Greenfield stated that for an otaku, information is the fuel that drives their worshipped dissemination systems. Furthermore, for an otaku, the only thing that matters is the accuracy of the ans wer and not its relevance. He said that no tiny little piece is trivial for them. Also, the object is not important for them, but the information is the heart of the matter. These are some of the definitions of Otaku as from a researchers point of view. However, there are also some views that define it in a larger point of view such as that of the society. Otakus negative image in the Japanese society The Otaku exists as a negative element of the Japanese society, which is an unreasonable and unfair judgement to give them. Otaku was an underground market in the beginning. No one wanted to be associated with the otaku. In Japan, the otaku was treated with intense negativity. For years, it was associated with depressing and downbeat colors. Lawrence Eng suggested that this was due to the growing anxiety of the Japanese adult society which thinks that the present young generation is growing more individualistic and isolated. Furthermore, that the young generation is not willing to fulfill mainstream duties and responsibilities for the country such as studying and working or finding a job(Eng). Also, the otaku has been associated with the alienation and isolation of the youth (Stenberg, 191). Media has also played a big role in building otakus negative image. According to Rebecca Scudder who reported that in 1983, Japanese media portrayed otaku with varying degrees of mockery. Otaku was labeled as antisocial, overweight, and unpopular the typical description of nerds and geeks in the US. Otaku was stereotyped as the persons who lived with a huge collection of their mania, unwilling to leave the house or get a job (2). With all the negativity of otaku building during the eighties, one incident really highlighted the negative image of otaku. In 1989, a psychopath named Tsutomu Miyazaki kidnapped, assaulted and murdered 4 little children (Scudder, 2). Police labeled him as otaku because they found a huge collection of anime and manga in his apartment (Eng). Some of the manga were pornographic which added fuel in the fire. Rebecca Scudder stated that Miyazaki was popularized by the media as an otaku murderer (2). This was the start of the otaku panic, as stated by Kinsella, that led to the association of the otaku to sociopaths like Miyazaki (qtd. by Lawrence Eng). The media accounted this deviant behavior on anime and manga, which led to the revulsion and panic (Eng). Since this incident, the otaku hit the mainstream with mostly derogatory remarks with strong hints of fear and loathing (Eng). Takashi Murakami, a self-confessed otaku and famous otaku/pop artist, acknowledged that the otaku culture is discriminated in against in Japan. This negative connotation has been generalized to all the otaku. Takashi Murakami said in an interview that when the police revealed Miyazakis room, it was just like an exact replica of his room. What he means is that, manga and anime are not the ones that are responsible for the deviant behaviour of Miyazaki. Murakami suggested that Miyazaki is a loser who lacked the critical ability of accumulating enormous information in order to survive and win at a debate among otaku. Azuma suggested that to understand the structure of Japanese post-modernity, one must understand the factors that led to the neglect of the otaku culture (1). These factors are: The association of otaku to the famous serial killer, Miyazaki The otaku has an existing strong collective hostility against those who do not share the same interests with them. Azuma suggested that their introversive and defensive tendencies can be thought of as a kind of inevitable reaction against social pressures. The socio-psychological problem of Japanese post-war identity Azuma stated that the Japanese had an existing difficulty after the Second World War to be able to evaluate and be proud of its own culture (1). These negative connotations affected the Otaku so much, but definitely, these ways of definition and seeing things is not proven. They do not have concrete arguments and proofs that Otaku is a negative culture. Positive effects of the Otaku on the Japanese culture There are many positive effects of the Otaku on the Japanese culture, as well as internationally. These positive effects are proven and are validated by concrete facts. First, looking at what Otaku means from their own perspective gives understanding on the real views of the Otaku. From a previous point, information is what is crucial for an otaku. But what does otaku really mean from an otakus perspective? When and where did the otaku started? And how did it really shape the Japanese culture and society. The Otaku is a misunderstood in most times because of the different changes in the history of Japan. To be able to understand the effects it has on the Japanese culture, one must understand first the history and definitions of the word from the otaku themselves. Hiroki Azuma stated that the otaku is a new cultural group that emerged in 1970s. It consists of enthusiastic consumers that were fascinated by different post-war Japanese subcultures, such as anime, manga, computer games, gadgets, music, movies, and so on (1). Hiroki Azuma discussed that otaku is one of the most important factors in the analysis of the Japanese Contemporary culture. He added that this was because the otakus mentalities have greatly influenced the Japanese society. Murakamis superflat conceptualities are being accounted to the artistic quality of the otaku sensibilities. Hiroki Azuma discussed that otaku culture is claimed to be a cultural successor of the pre-modern Japanese traditions, specifically the Edo tradition. This succession theory was emphasized by otaku critics, Toshio Okada and Eiji Otsuka. However, according to Azuma, the otaku culture should be accounted to the recent domestication of post-war American culture. Furthermore, Azuma claimed that the otaku culture is essentially nationalistic, which was developing at the same time with the Japanese rapid economical growth and the recovery of national self-confidence in 1950s and 1960s (1). Therefore, the Otaku culture is positive, in the sense that it was made to promote nationalism. Examples of this nationalistic view are: Spaceship Yamato (TV anime film 1970s) which is claimed to be an imitation of the pre-war Japanese military (Azuma, 1). Saber Marionette J (TV anime film) which was claimed to be an allegory abstracted from an actual otaku situation (Azuma, 1). For an otaku, examination of the content is a very crucial task. Information is the heart of their goals. Azuma discussed further that the otaku culture has two layers of simulacra and database. This means that an otaku does not only appreciate the superficial design aesthetically. An otaku immediately decomposes the image into many elements and feels zeal to reassemble them up into another character (2). Promoting nationalism is a positive thing. From these facts and descriptions, we can say that the Otaku contributed to these nationalist views. How the Otaku changed the Japanese culture The Otaku has changed the Japanese culture in the most unthinkable ways. It started internationally, then eventually, was slowly accepted in the society. In 1991, some interesting modern approach to the Otaku culture has surfaced. The development Otaku no Video (Studio Gainax animation production) that has given rise to a profound interest on the otaku culture. It has also reduced the negative perception and even stereotypes previously associated with the culture thereby increasing the acceptability of the otaku culture and the associated hobbies. After that, the culture has been used by some political leaders to promote the state of Japan to the international community. Even the former Prime Minister of Japan Taro Aso claimed himself to be an otaku (Scudder, 2). After the worldwide release of the film in 1992, fans US, Great Britain, France, Canada began to use otaku as a term to describe themselves. The Otaku sensation paved way for the creation of a hit novel, Train Man. This promoted self-confidence in ones culture. Everyone has a right to be proud of himself, be it an Otaku or not. In 2004, Train Man, a novel by Hitori Nakano, was popularized worldwide because of its unusual love theme. It has also been made into a TV and animation series. It focuses on the love complications of a computer geek (otaku). It portrays another side of the otaku that made the computer otaku popular. It showed that geeks also have hearts. They are capable of communicating, however there arises difficulties. The novel shows that even computer geeks can change for the better. Carlo Santos described it as a novel that pictures a young mans journey from self-deprecation to self-confidence. This gave the otaku culture a light to promote that they are nowhere near the negative connotations attached to them (1). Confidence in ones culture is another positive effect that the Otaku contributed in the Japane se society. Effects of the Otaku in the International Scene The otaku made a successful new market culture in the international scene. From US back to Asia, Otaku has become a craze, shaping the minds of other cultures. Anthony Chatfield reported that anime first appeared in the US market in the 60s in the form of Kimba the White Lion and Astroboy. However, these did not earn a favourable response. Only when Speed Racer arrived did the anime market was distinguished. This was the beginning of the consciousness that Japan was creating something new and exciting. Although the popularity of Speed Racer was not comparable to its American contemporaries, it paved a way to introduce more Japanese otaku to the international market. Different fanbases emerged they were willing to consume the latest offerings such as Starblazers and Robotech. However, the results were mostly underground (1). In 1989, Akira was released internationally and the effect was booming. The international audience was eagerly waiting for more new releases from Japan (Chatfield, 1). In Japan, this was a major business expansion. Shows like Gundam and Dragon Ball overgrew and made runway sensations. The manga industry also expanded along with the anime industry (Chatfield, 1). The international effects of the Otaku are worth mentioning and needs praise. Effects of the otaku in the Japanese Economy The international hit booming of the Otaku led to the advances and innovations in the Japanese economy. The Otaku industry is becoming more and more successful in the development of the economy through the international self-acclaimed Otakus. In 1990s, the anime became mainstream in Japan. Examples were the monumental runs of Dragonball, which had 156 episodes and Dragonball Z, which had 276 episodes. The Japanese otaku economy boomed, earning companies billions of yen, acquiring commercial sponsorships, and funding vast incredible projects that require sums of money to complete (Chatfield, 2). In 1995, American producers saw the huge effect of the anime market happening in Japan. They tried marketing some of these anime Dragonball Z and Sailormoon in the air. Then, Neon Genesis Evangelion release in Japan and show releases in the US made the otaku interest roar abroad (Chatfield, 3). In 1998, the Gameboy conquered the American market along with the enormously popular Pokemon anime. Films began to pour liberally in the US, at that time, the fansub scene was the only way to access some of the more obscure titles that are currently released in Japan. As the market boomed, so did the licensing of major companies. This was the beginning of the final and full assimilation of Japanese pop culture into American (Chatfield, 3). Nowadays, anime products and merchandise are rampant in the isle of supermarkets. The Anime Network also gained its growing success. Magazines such as Japanese trade magazines for the anime industry has now been translated and marketed in the US. Even American director James Cameron is fond of the manga named Battle Angel Alita (Chatfield, 4). This is a clear picture that otaku has made a big step in advancing Japanese art and culture in the international market. Furthermore, the marketing volumes of the Japanese anime and manga proved to be a big advancement, as well as achievement, in the Japanese economy. The otaku craze has also infected Taiwan and other neighboring countries. When compared with the Taiwans Otaku, the perception to otaku is different from the tradition Japanese stereotyping. The Taiwanese otaku emerged in the 1990s. During this period, the computers and internet had gained acceptability and wide range of usage. The usage of this technology had gained unmatched popularity that was not there prior to this period. The otaku was basically viewed as a group of consumers who had preference for some given obsession. This group exhibited craze for anime, some games and manga. People have created new things based on their common interest and obsession. They otaku have to spend money to meet their obsession. This had led to creativity as this people strive to satisfy their obsession and fantasies. The otaku have been found to be fewer prizes sensitive when comparison is made with other consumers. They have formed communities through online or using internet as medium of interaction. It has been evidenced that among the otaku, the information is exchanged rather fast. Jack Hsu reported that the Taiwan otaku is at its consumption stage, meaning, they rather consume than produce their own anime or manga. Furthermore, he reported that the Taiwanese otaku show extremely high preferences towards Japanese Cultural commodities. Taiwanese otaku were found to consume Japanese productions such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Spreading Excitement All over the World with the Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade, Densha Otoko, Akihabara @ Deep and KERORO. Because of this success and popularity, the otaku was popularized as a huge market. And for a true otaku, a price does not matter. In other words, otaku was treated as a new group of mass consumers. Thus, this gives another boom for the Japanese marketing economy. The generation gap associated with stereotypes and the otaku has been fading. The resistance toward the otaku culture also seems to have considerably weathered. This is because, some of the product that were originally associated with the otaku have become domesticated and publicly acceptable. The otaku have been considered as a general group of what can be referred to as mass consumers. Attention should also be paid to the potential for creativity that is likely to be derived from the otaku. To many, the otaku culture is associated with mystery. The otaku became obsessed with some hobbies, which became part of them. The otaku use the media and materials to craft a self and even space. The otaku emerged out of young people conviction that through animation, they could influence the next generation (Dave, 27). This was born out of frustration and boredom. A lot of people and especially the youth were displaced. The economic potential and the creativity of otaku only gained appreciatio n at the turn of the millennium. The otaku culture became appreciated in Japan. The otaku culture has many positive effects especially since the time it gained popularity in Japan and the world over (Flemming et al., 60). These were evident in the American otaku industry and the Taiwan otaku market industry. The otaku culture has also gone revolution associated with the modern and the post modernity period. There were fundamental conditions that changed culture associated with capitalism. This change was attributed to the late capitalist societies that included the Japan, the European countries and the American. The changes were consequently accompanied by the transformation of many areas of cultural production. (Azuma, 10). The Otaku culture is proven to effectively develop and advance the Japanese economy through the international fan scenes. Conclusion The Otaku in spite of the wrong negative connotations that are associated with it, grew to be the one promoting nationalism, international applause, and economic development. The otaku culture has therefore played a significant role, both as the consumers of the popular culture and also as producers of this culture. They are also consumers and producers of the mass media products (Steinberg et al, 191). Iles furthered the idea that the otaku are intimate representatives of contemporary Japan. The Otaku is not of the mainstream. However, the otaku who stand as avatars of the Japanese consumer in fact play an important role in qualifying the nature of postmodern consumption. The otaku has proved to be effective representatives in the promotion, growth and expansion in the Japanese culture, the economy and the promotion of Japanese art and culture around the world.

Life with Vision Loss Due to MS Joyce Bohen recently wrote a book about her experience with multiple sclerosis. She told about her battle with multiple sclerosis and one of her major symptoms, optic neuritis. In this book, she told each individual to imagine life from one day being able to see bright colors and distinct pictures to only realize that as each day goes by the world is beginning to look darker and darker until you can see nothing but black. Not only did she experience blindness but also came the intense pain. After seeing a neurologist many times and continuously being treated with steroids to help her vision return, she finally gave up her battle and began to accept the idea that she would never be able to see again. The goal of her book was to help those with low vision accept the idea that life will never be the same and that there are strategic ways to get around this disability. One of the coping mechanisms she suggested was to outline doorways, steps, and wall switches with high contrast or textu red tape. This story of one woman's dedication and perseverance to get through her disability should give researchers all the persuasion needed to continue on discovering permanent treatments or even preventive methods for optic neuritis (Cohen, Dinerstein, & Katz, 2001). Another woman's determination went beyond coping mechanisms. After being touched by her brother's battle with multiple sclerosis Silvia Lawry created the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Her goal was to begin research that could help end the suffering of all those individuals who were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Her dream is to try to help discover a cure for symptoms such as optic neuritis (Scott, 2001). Multiple sclerosis can be defined as an inflammatory, autoimmune, and demyelinating complex disease of the central nervous system (Kidd, 2001). More common in women than men, the disease can strike at an early age, "especially when reproduction is a major consideration" (Sadovnick, Guimond, & Dwosh, 2001 p374). It is known to be the most common cause of "neurological disabilities in young adults" (Kidd, 2001 p540). The most common type of multiple sclerosis is the relapse remitting which later turns into secondarily progressing. This means that the patient will no longer go into relapse but rather begins progressing farther into the disease. There is a disability scale called Kurtzke's Extended Disability Status Scale that determines the status and progression of the disability. There are many elements within an organization that can ensure its success, two of which are the training and the development of its employees. Training and developing employees effectively would provide all employees at all levels the tools and information they will need to perform their jobs successfully within the company. Implementing effective employee development methods can be a benefit and can ensure that changes in the daily routine are accomplished. Programs can be made available to meet the needs of the company with the involvement of the human resources department. These programs are very important for the development and training of the career minded employee. Role of Training in an Organization’s Development DeCenzo and Robbins (2007) indicate that employee training is the â€Å"present-oriented training that focuses on an individual’s current jobs.†Ã‚  This indicates that developing employee’s knowledge and skill set is a key factor in assisting employees in performing their job functions more effectively. While organizational development is contingent on how employees will perform in their daily job functions, employee training offers the opportunity to further develop the employee’s attitude, skill set, knowledge, and reactions to possible stressors. When workers become open to new training techniques and become more experienced in performing new job requirements the company benefits along with the employee. Employee training aids in more viable production, and even though employee training can cost an organization financially the long-term effects of properly training its employee is more valuable to the organization than the overall cost it incurs. The company can further the development of its employees by providing additional training which puts value in the employees personal stock, increases the talent pool and increases the duties the employee can perform. Employee Development Methods and Benefits According to DeCenzo and Robbins (2007) career-oriented training assists companies by focusing on an employee’s personal growth. These types of methods consist of assistant-to positions, job rotation, committee assignment, and off- the-job development. The assistant-to positions method assists an employee who is seeking a management position. The method involves providing the employee with the opportunity of working side-by-side with experienced managers. Working as an assistant to a manager provides much needed experience in various activities and the opportunity to perform duties at a higher caliber. Employee development by implementing the job rotation method assists in cross-training employees in various positions within the company. This method offers employees an opportunity to sharpen skills in various positions. Job rotation consists of two forms of rotations; one form is referred to as the vertical rotation which consists of promoting an employee to a new position. The second form is called the horizontal rotation which provides employee’s an opportunity to perform duties in various positions  within the company’s daily operations. Job rotations can be extremely beneficial because they can increase an employee’s skill set within the company, allowing them to have hands on knowledge of the daily operations of many job positions (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007). Committee assignments are another method of employee development. Committee assignments benefit both the company and employees as it permits an employee to develop his or her skill set by watching other employee, it aids in the investigation of organizational issues, and assists in the organizational decision making process (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007). The committee assignment can also help in develop employee’s skills. Assigning employees to permanent committee assignments can assist the company in the decision-making processes as well as researching long-term goals. The off-the-job method of employee development consists of simulation exercises, seminars, lecture courses, and outdoor training that the employee would be involved in. Simulations are beneficial because they provide each employee the opportunity to be involved in a realistic work experience by completing certain work-related exercises. These exercises consist of role playing, case studies and games based on decision making (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007). Simulations are beneficial because they can prepare employees with possible ways to handle stressful situations in the workplace with co-workers and in customer service situations. Seminars, lecture courses, and outdoor training are other kinds of employee development. Seminars and lectures benefit a company by helping employees develop and acknowledge the analytical and conceptual abilities they have concerning the employee’s profession. There are various methods of putting on lectures and seminars. These methods are via distance learning and a less cost-efficient method of using the Internet. Outdoor training is beneficial to an organization as it teaches employees team building skills. An employee performing several physical challenges in the wilderness is what the outdoor training entails. Performing these physical challenges helps organizations understand how they will respond under pressure, and how they work as a team. These challenges empower employees to work together as a team and it  encourages employees to build relationships by accomplishing these stressful challenges within a group setting. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMPLOYEE AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT To allow companies to focus on making improvements, management must focus on the importance of developing a relationship between the employee and organizational development. According to DeCenzo & Robbins, â€Å"Organizational development consists of addressing changes within the organization.† (2007). Organizational and employee development is important when implementing new processes and procedures within a company. To perform new processes, management will need to train department employees on new production methods and the procedures and skill sets to perform these new processes. To accomplish these processes the company and employees will have to adjust to operational changes. Human resources management will first need to identify these changes and create training programs to improve the employee’s skills on the new processes. Human Resources Management’s Role in Career Development Human resources management’s role in career development has increased of late. To assist employees in achieving their career goals, human resources management strives to provide employees with the tools needed to accomplish these goals. The current career development programs of the Human resources management department help HRM give employees the self-confidence to further their education. This is done by communicating the plans and goals, tuition reimbursement, growth opportunities, and scheduling educational classes. Developing employee’s careers is extremely beneficial to the company. Developing an employee’s career helps to retain and promote highly talented employees within the company along with assisting women and other minorities by giving them the opportunities to grow within the organization. It will also help to create cultural diversity in the workplace while improving the quality and performance of the employees work skills. (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007). Creating and implementing a career development plan will help human resources management deliver the organizations main goals in attracting,  retaining, and promoting employees within the company. Look at the opening of Nicolas Hytner Essay

   The music gets faster as he finds his way through the trees and bushes, Then he comes close to the area where the girls are though he does not it is them the music changes to a drum beat with Parris’ footsteps being able to be heard. The camera changes back to the girls with Abigail walking up to Tituba and then Abigail whispers in Abigail’s ear and Tituba looks scared and shocked as she say no. Abigail then turns around to the pot runs to it and picks up the chicken by its feet and hits its head of a rock breaking its neck the Abigail drinks the blood of the chicken. Then Abigail takes her clothes off, all the girls are screaming then one of the girls sees Parris coming towards them so they all run away except Betty who says that she cannot move. The camera angles through all of this were very fast and furious. Then everything starts to slow down with a picture of Parris on his own looking at the cauldron he lifts up the large spoon inside the pot and drops as if he was scared of it, when he see the chicken as well he gets annoyed though he is a bit scared. The next scene shows Betty in her bed, with a suspicion of witchcraft floating about the place. Only Tituba and Abigail are in the room with Betty there have about eight minutes of filming yet we hear no words spoken. There is obvious tension between Tituba and Abigail over what has happened. More tension is shown when Parris questions Abigail about the incident in the forest. Now music is played again with Abigail saying that they danced but Parris suspects witch craft though Abigail is saying that no spirits have been conjured. The next scene is of Elizabeth and John Proctor who are showing a lot of tension. This tension is raised because John Proctor had an affair with there former servant, and guess who that servant was†¦ Abigail Williams. The scene starts of quite pleasant really with John Proctor and his sons working, the music is quite cheerful, the camera angles are quite far of. John Proctor and his go inside with his sons going to bed and him going to have his dinner. Elizabeth gives it to him without speaking but when they do speak it is about how there marriage is falling apart. Then the final scene of tension is in Church with the whole village there when a song is sung the girls go over to Betty’s room then Abigail speaks to Betty saying she has told her father everything that happened in the woods. Then like lightning Betty wakes up with her saying â€Å"I bet you never told him that you drank a charm Abby, a charm to kill Goody Proctor†. Then the music gets very loud this is emphasising how important this scene really is. The others girls get quite scared and start to walk away so Abigail threatens them that she would kill anyone who tells on her doings. The camera is only on Abigail, but then Betty jumps up shouting she wants her mom and tries to fly to her out of the window but the girls hold her back and everyone in the church rubs out to them. This causes a lot of tension between all the girls and makes witch craft a better conclusion to what has been happening. In conclusion to Nicolas Hytner’s film of the play â€Å"The Crucible† was directed extremely well making them beginning of the film already better to the book the film sets the scene better and I believe that it also creates more tension. Also with the plot being so old it was sometimes easier to understand the words better with them being said correctly and with also being able to see what is going on. Nicolas Hytner has used cinematic features to the best they could be in this film there fore making the filming better for all viewers. All About Snow Fleas, a Wingless Insect For the bug enthusiasts among us, its a happy day when we find snow fleas. At the end of a long, cold, nearly bug-free winter, we feel lucky to find a mass of tiny arthropods hopping about in the melting snow. Snow fleas are actually not  fleas  at all, but a kind of  springtail. Because theyre tiny and tend to jump, they remind people of fleas and thus were given this inaccurate name. What Do Snow Fleas Look Like? From even a short distance away, snow fleas look like bits of dirt or pepper on the surface of the snow. They catch peoples attention because they have a habit of jumping. At times, snow fleas gather in such large numbers they make the snow look black or blue. They tend to aggregate on the surface of the snow around the trunks of trees. Take a closer look, however, and youll find that snow fleas look similar to other springtails. Theyre quite small, reaching only 2-3 millimeters in length. The springtails we find flinging themselves across the snow are usually blue in color. In North America, the snow fleas were likely to find belong to the genus  Hypogastrura. Why and How Do Snow Fleas Jump? Snow fleas are wingless insects, incapable of flying. They move by walking and jumping. But unlike other famous jumping arthropods like  grasshoppers  or  jumping spiders, snow fleas dont use their legs to jump. Snow fleas catapult themselves into the air by releasing a spring-like mechanism called a  furcula, a sort of tail thats folded underneath its body - thus the name springtail. When the furcula releases, the snow flea is launched several inches in the air, a considerable distance for such a tiny bug. Its an effective way to flee potential predators quickly, although they have no way to steer. Why Do Snow Fleas Gather on the Snow? Snow fleas live in the soil and leaf litter, even in the winter months, where they munch away on decaying vegetation and other organic matter. Springtails are actually quite common and abundant, but theyre so tiny that they tend to blend in and go unnoticed. Remarkably, snow fleas dont freeze in the winter thanks to a special kind of protein in their bodies. This protein is rich in  glycine, an  amino acid, which enables the protein to bind to ice crystals and keep them from growing. It works much like the antifreeze we put in our cars. The antifreeze protein allows snow fleas to remain alive and active even in subzero temperatures. On warm and sunny winter days, particularly as we get closer to spring, snow fleas make their way up through the snow, perhaps in search of food. As they gather in numbers on the white surface, flinging themselves from place to place, they attract our attention. How Do I Get Rid of Snow Fleas? Why would you want to get rid of snow fleas? Theyre perfectly harmless. They dont bite, they cant make you sick, and they wont hurt your plants. In fact, they help improve your soil by breaking down organic material. Leave them be. Once the snow melts and spring arrives, youll forget theyre even there - unless you like bugs, in which case you may find yourself searching for them in the soil. People dont die, they pass away. Politicians dont commit crimes, they make mistakes. Married men dont commit adultery, they cheat. People dont fart, they pass wind. The word for this substitution of a less offensive word or phrase for a more specific or unpleasant one is euphemism. The word is from Greek euphemizein speak with fair words. The concept stemmed from the belief that the gods listened to human conversations and could be easily offended. People were careful not to boast of their wealth or accomplishments, so as not to prompt some god to reverse their fortunes as punishment. The maiden Arachne, for example, learned to her cost what came of boasting. For claiming that she was a more skillful weaver than the goddess Athena, Arachne was transformed into a spider. (To this day spiders bear her name.) The more horrific the deity, the more necessary it was for mortals to speak nicely about them. The Erinyes, female personifications of vengeance, were really gruesome. Like the Gorgon, they had snakes on their heads. Drops of blood oozed from their eyes. They flew after oath-breakers on the wings of bats. Watch the film Jason and the Argonauts to see the Furies in action. In order to stroke their egos, ancient Greeks referred to them as the Eumenides, the Kindly Ones. Modern mortals use euphemisms to avoid offending (or frightening, or informing) other people. The opposite of euphemism is dysphemism, an intentionally harsh word intended to shock or offend. The Coen brothers go a little overboard with the F word in The Big Lebowski. Euphuism is a term that describes a flowery, affected type of writing. Euphues is Greek for graceful, witty. Sixteenth century English author John Lyly wrote a book called Euphues: The Anatomy of Wyt (1578). The main character is a fashionable young man named Euphues. The style in which the book is written is full of convoluted sentences, euphemisms, rhetorical questions, alliteration, and references to classical literature. (In the 16th century educated people were assumed to be familiar with Greek and Latin literature.) Heres an example of Lylys euphuistic style. For the fun of seeing how English has changed since the 16th century, Ill give you both the original and a modernization. John Bowlby, the father of attachment theory, considered attachment as a biological necessity - he noted separation anxiety of young children and how babies needed to cling to their mothers in times of stress.

Cheating and plagiarism for my religion class Essay The movie we watched was very interesting. I felt like I could definitely relate to most of the situations they brought up. In particular, the point about how you felt the need to cheat nowadays to keep up with the cheaters. Their information was very accurate and it really gives you a look into what life is like as a student. When watching it I really felt like what they were saying was pro-cheater. The only problem with the movie was the give a lot of great reasons why there is such a high percentage of cheaters out there, but the never offered any ways to fix the problem. Then the movie switched to the problem of plagiarism. They addressed the issue and showed some of the difficulties of trying to detect it. They then went into the only way of detecting it and how to avoid detection. Afterward they showed an example of a class and how bad plagiarism has gotten. Still they never offered any way to solve the problem. I really enjoyed the movie we watched in class it was very interesting. Through out the movie I felt could relate to the students telling their experiences. For example, one girl talked about how she feels the need to cheat to keep up with all the other cheaters out there. From my experience, I have tried studying long hours for tests and then going in the next day, taking the test and then having the person next to me cheat and get a higher grade. I myself cheat because nowadays it is all about grades and getting into the best colleges and getting the highest grade point average (g.p.a.), and with out a good g.p.a., you cannot get into a good college. So to get into a good college and get a good paying job some people are willing to do what ever it takes and to keep up with them we have to do the same things. Through out the movie I got the sense that they were taking a pro-cheater standpoint. I noticed that they really didnt show you anyone who got anywhere in life by not cheating and so I got the feeling that they wanted us to walk away with better knowledge and methodologies on how to cheat. By the end of the movie, I really felt like cheating was no longer a bad thing and in fact it had actually become almost necessary to succeed in life and everyone is doing it. They also gave only examples of people who cheat all the time and easily get away with it. Once again, they never offered any solution to the problem. Next, they talked about plagiarism. They did an experiment with a World History class and had the kids write a paper on their favorite explorer. Then the teacher took all the papers and used the one tool out there that can check for plagiarism, turnitin.com. She submitted all the papers to this website and got them back with all the plagiarized portion of each students paper underlined. When she got the papers back, more than half the papers were plagiarized and some only had a few original sentences. It just goes to show how big of a problem plagiarism is these days. Then they said that the website only detects plagiarism if eight of the words are an exact match so to avoid detection all you have to do is change every eighth word and to be on the safe side you could play around with that number. Even though the movie never offered any way of solving either problem, they still informed you of the problem. I really enjoyed the movie. I left wanting to cheat and plagiarize. In the movie, they talked about a person who would write papers for you for $25 a page. Though I dont know anyone that would do that for me, if I did, after watching the movie, I probably would have enlisted for his help. However, I dont know anyone who would so I guarantee that this paper is completely original.

Franz Kafka's Judgement    This short story of Franz Kafka is really a challenging one to interpret but apparently there are some contextual clues that enables us to draw some logical conclusions out of the story. Firstly, we should handle this story in terms of human relationships; there are 3 kind of relationships represented in the story. The first is the relationship between George (the main character of the story) and his friend in Russia; the second is George's relationship with his fiancà ©e and the third is his relationship with his father. Each exposition of these relationships contradicts with the persons involved in. That is, while George is devoted to writing to a friend whom he hasn't seen for 3 years, he doesn't write about important events. George tracks himself as a lonely character throughout the story so he may be trying to share his loneliness with a friend, but he has his fiancà ©e near him as well. However, we aren't informed enough about how close their relationship is in th at they are engaged only for a month. Then, we witness an extraordinary relationship of a father and a son. George and his father are like strangers to one another partly because his father is like a brutal shadow on him limiting his life. Only after her mom is dead that his father becomes less aggressive and gives him chance at their family business to put forward new plans and expand the business.    Then we should handle the problem of the judgement. What kind of a judgemant is this? The judgement of the father to sentence his son to death or George's own judgement to free himself from the burden of such a restricted life with a dreadful and unloving father left behind after his mom's death though his life standards are high. Here, we should take a look at the characters in depth to better interpret the story. There is round characterization of George who is represented as the main figure in the story. He is a young merchant running a family business with his widowed father. He and his father must be living in a wealthy neighborhood as it says in the story that they live in a graceful house along the bank of a river with maids in it.

Demonic Possession Belief in the possibility of demonic possession has waned since the advent of sophisticated medical knowledge. What had previously been considered to be examples of control of an individual by a spirit or devil are now commonly accepted as numerous forms of mental illness, easily explained by nervous system activity. If all types of behavior (including emotional states and cognitive states) are produced and mediated solely by the brain, there leaves no potential for such a phenomenon as demonic possession to exist and such cases would clearly be instances of various illnesses. However, neuroscience has not yet been able to explain all of the characteristics common to purported cases of demonic possession ((1). A possessed individual is typically characterized by having strange physical ailments or disfigurements; verbal outbursts, mostly obscene or sacrilegious in nature; violent behavior and vulgar behavior; bodily spasms and contortions; ability to speak languages never before studied; self-mutilation; "superhuman" abilities such as psychic abilities, abnormal strength, or an ability to perform behaviors out of the realm of human possibility such as levitation; cessation of normal bodily functions for periods of time, including breathing and heart beat; and a pronounced revulsion to symbols, places, people, objects, and ceremonies having any religious context. Other phenomena associated with the presence of a demon include an acrid stench; marked decrease in the temperature of the room which a possessed individual occupies; writing appearing out of nowhere; sounds and voices arising from nowhere; and objects moving on their own and destruction of objects in the room, without anyone havin g laid a hand upon them ((2), (3). Despite the striking quality of this description, the expansion of the fields of medicine and psychology has led to diagnoses other than demonic possession for individuals who present circumstances similar to those mentioned above. These sorts of cases are now readily explained in terms of abnormal functioning in the brain and nervous system. There are various disorders which may mimic demonic possession; these include schizophrenia (and other periods of psychosis), dissociative identity disorder, and Tourette syndrome ((4). Schizophrenia is characterized by the presence of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, affective flattening or inappropriate emotional responses, avolition, and alogia. General psychotic episodes, such as might accompany mood disorders, can also closely simulate a state of demonic possession by hallucinations or delusions. The delusions can be ones of thought insertion, thought broadcasting, delusions of guilt, delusions of grandeur, such as being God (or a demon), or delusions that God (or a demon) is speaking to the person and giving commands for a special mission (5).

College Pressure Essay

William Zinsser’s in his essay â€Å"College Pressure† published 1979, describes the pressures Yale students have economic, parental, and peer/self- induced. He says that these pressures make students afraid to take a risk and to try to take different paths. He wants them to believe in themselves and to try to enjoy their time in college. I have been a student at Reedley Community College for two years and the pressure I experience as a student and a mother are different from that the Yale student experienced. The first pressure that Yale students and I experience is economic pressure. Zinsser explains that in the 1970’s â€Å"tuition, room, and board at most private colleges comes at least $7000† (par.12).He also explains how much pressure Yale students are under, that â€Å"even if the [student] works part time during school and full time during the summer†, but accrue $5000 in loans after four years, loans that the [student] must start to repay w ithin one year after graduation† (par.13). Then, Zinsser goes on to say that no matter how hard the student works he or she will be under pressure to pay back all the money he used. I relate to this pressure, but in a very different way. Although the cost of school for me is relatively low, I have four kids that are away at college. Having four children needing help with tuition and books puts a lot of financial pressure on me as a parent. Also, having six kids in general, three of which are girls, is expensive regardless. The country’s economic disparity has left personal finances tight and puts me under a lot of pressure to make sure my kids have everything that they need and that all bills are paid. Another pressure William Zinsser’s mentions is parental pressure which Yale students and I feel but slightly different .It refers to the amount of pressure students get from their parents. The students are being torn between pleasing their parents and pleasing themselves. Zinsser’s mentions that â€Å"often times students are walking to labs as though they are walking to the dentist.†(par.15) Students are taking on majors in a course of study that they do not necessarily like, however, in order to keep their parents happy they take them on. They are under pressure because they want to please their parents but they’re unhappy they want to do. Because they aren’t doing what. Because I am an adult this pressure does not really apply to me. However, I do feel the pressure from my children. My children expect me to get good grades, as well as maintain everything in the house. When dinner is not made on time because of my homework, my children get upset. They also complain about laundry not being done quickly enough. Although they support me, their expectations of me put me under a lot of pressure. The final pressure that Zinsser mentions is Peer/ self-induced pressure which are a pressure that Yale students and I apply on us. Students apply unnecessary pressure on them by comparing themselves to their peers. Zinsser mentions that a student he calls Linda â€Å"who came in and said she was under terrible pressure because her roommate, Barbra was much brighter and studied all the time.† This student is a perfect example of making an unnecessary comparison which stresses her out. This pressure leads to students over work them-selves. â€Å"A professor will assign five-page papers†. â€Å"Several students will start writing ten-page papers to impress him.†(par.27). Instead of just following the guidelines of an assignment they are trying to shoot above and beyond the requirements. I can really relate to this pressure because I do add a lot of stress on myself. I immediately assume everyone is doing better than me which makes me work harder, but at the same time it causes me to over work myself. I have to make sure all my kids need are done, and then I stay up late to make sure all my school work is done. This pressure affects me negatively because I add a lot of stress on myself that does not need to be added. Instead of focusing on my growth academically. I am always worried about who is doing better than me in class. A couple of ways I am trying to manage my stress is by making daily and weekly to-do lists and putting the most important at the top and working my way down. It’s a great way to manage my time as well. Being that I am a mother of six, my stress level seems like it’s multiplied by seven and I need to be able to put some of that stress aside and finally focus on my schooling since my oldest is twenty-two and my youngest is thirteen. Another great way I make stresses more manageable is by keeping procrastination to a huge minimum. If work that is assigned gets gradually done before the due date, it won’t all pile up the night before causing you to panic. Stress always piles up and it occurs more than any of us would like, but it shouldn’t be a reason to fail. By overcoming these pressures, we become stronger at the end.

Debriefing importance

Debriefing particularly focusing on â€Å"the role of debriefing In simulation based learning'. Quickly before I begin, could you raise your hand if you have taken part in a debrief post simulation,†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.. L know for at least the past two years I personally have taken part in debriefing, after every scenario completed in class, being from Sonny's cardiology course to Brains trauma subject. Alright lets begin Slide 2.What we cover In this presentation we will cover â€Å"What debriefing Is† We will talk about aspects of briefing as well as defining the term†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ We will cover examples of debriefing in the workplace as well as deliberate what happened in those examples. And finally we will discuss the positives that can be taken from a well structured debriefing session. Slide 3. Defining In this context, debriefing Is a part of the reflection process that follows a simulation experience led by a facilitator.Feedback is provided on the simulations participants performance while positive aspects of the completed simulation are discussed with reflective thinking encouraged. Debriefing Encourages reflective learning, which allows the participants to link theory to practice and research, think critically, and discuss how to intervene professionally in complex situations Slide 4. Simulation Learning Simulation learning is an activity that mimics reality. It is designed to emulate real life problems in which the patient may be presenting with.Simulation learning has been used for a long time in the health care field as it helps consolidate and enhance clinical skills, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. Simulation learning provides a safe environment for learning and for the further development of kills. Slide 6. How to debrief So how do you debrief Well there are several strategies that exist such as the GAS model and the Tanners Clinical Judgment Model. These strategies are designed so that the student can reflect in a gr oup on what happened, why it happened and what they would do If placed In a similar situation.For debriefing to be successful It needs to be focused on outcomes and objectives so that the simulation Is controlled and has meaning to the participants. Slide 7. Facilitators Role The Facilitator Role is to control and mediate the discussion. They need to provide sociological safety by being trustworthy, respectful, and confidential. Facilitators need to provide honest feedback to the students and develop debriefing skills to Slide 8. Debriefing Environment The debriefing environment needs to be Positive, non-threatening, respectful and confidential.A good way to perform a debrief is with all participants and facilitators at the same eye level. In the subject CLICKS videotaping was used as part of the debriefing process, as the participants could analyses and critique how they performed. The facilitator should encourage the participants to talk and discuss linings, events and transfer of knowledge between participants and the rest of the group. It is also recommended that the debriefing takes place in a different location to the simulation as the participants need to distance themselves from the role they played in the simulation.Slide 9. Timing of Debriefing Debriefing should be conducted straight after simulation, so participants thoughts and emotions are present. Debriefing is crucial for development with the debriefing often lasting longer then the simulation. The majority of the debrief should be used or discussion and analysis of events as this is where the majority of learning comes from. Initially you should explore feelings and reactions to what occurred during the simulation followed by the transfer of why the events happened and reflection.Following a debriefing model such as GAS or Tanners Critical Judgment Model allows both the facilitator and students to Justify and elaborate on their treatment plan while also reflecting on what could be performed nex t time. Having effective debriefs post simulation can be effective to everybody involved as it provides insight into the students clinical decision making skills and provides them with feedback of positives as well as things they need to improve on.

Original Essay Marriage is commonly defined as the relationship between two people of opposite sex known as husband and wife, and it is a key to bring them happiness. Therefore, choosing a husband and wife is one of the most important decisions for everyone’s life because a marriage can bring either a happy life or an unhappy life. In many countries in the world, and especially in the western countries, a man or woman can choose their own partner. In contrast, in some countries like Cambodia, parents arrange their children’s marriage. However, if we take a closer look at arranged marriages, there are some contrasting ideas about them in our society. We can easily acknowledge that parents have more life experience, but this does not necessarily assure that they will always choose the right spouse for their child. In fact, arranged marriage generally has both advantages and disadvantages. One of the most important advantages to arranged marriage is having a good financial security and living condition. Of course, Money doesn’t automatically bring a good happiness, but the lack of money can cause lots of troubles in the family and stresses in any relationship. In Cambodian tradition, parents often involve transfers of property to their marrying children, and hopefully they wish to bring their children with a very good financial and living condition. For example, some Cambodian parents give property such as house, land, money and jewelry to the new couple after getting married, and they have an important role in solving any problems happening to their married children. In addition, parents have greater life experiences than their children; therefore, they can usually make a better decision or judgment. For instance, In Cambodian culture, many parents always think carefully about whom their children should marry, and most of their thoughts focus on financial situation, family status and individual behavior because they strongly believe that if their children get married to a husband or wife who has these things, problem will not happen. The second advantage of the arranged marriage is that children can bring gratefulness and honor to their family. Cambodian people believe in Buddhism. In Buddhism, People believe in returning gratitude to their parents, and hildren have an obligation to maintain their family’s honor. Marrying into a good family is considered to be a way of returning gratitude to parents, especially for a young girl. Moreover, getting married to someone that is arranged by parents is recognized that children obey Khmer traditional culture and respect their parents gratefully. For example, when a daughter get married to man that is selected by her parents, she w ill be considered a grateful daughter because everything she behaves doesn’t go against Khmer tradition. The third advantage is that parents can end a very big and important duty in their life. Traditionally, it is an obligation for Cambodian parents to choose and arrange marriage for their children so that their family’s reputation and honor can be retained. Generally, Cambodian children live with their parents until they get married, and parents have a lot of responsibilities for their children. Choosing marriage partner for their children is one of the most important responsibilities during their life. For instance, from the time their children were born until the time they get married parents have to do a lot of duties such as taking care of their children’s health, earning money to support the basic needs and education for their children and looking for children’s marriage partner either. After getting married, children have their own responsibility and they have to follow the ways their parents behave toward them. How research is conducted depends on the nature of the reality one wishes to study, the knowledge we have about that reality and then the way that knowledge is organized. In other words the ontology, epistemology and metho dology of social research refers to the various sectors of sociological information we have. With regards to social policy and personal lives, quantitative research will tell us very little about the way we perceive our surroundings, but qualitative research is focused on the individual for whom that very society is constructed. Social policies such as welfare systems and educational institutions are built around the specific social group and while it is well known that generalizations about society are often made, qualitative research seeks to verify certain realities. The research essentially grants the scientist the viewpoint 'from the horse's mouth'. For example, what people think about legal systems can be postulated around ones own opinion, but it is only when others are asked that this hypothesis can be true or not. One can always assume that people work for instance in the Care-giving industry because they enjoy it or because they feel a moral obligation to do so, but by asking the recipient themselves a clearer picture is given. That Care work is relegated to those with more compassion than other, may necessarily be assumption, but the relationship between personal lives and this form of social policy cannot be removed. This is because Care work is based on the individual and not the collectivity. Therefore care-workers are often spit into formal and informal (Fink, 2004: 5). This basically splits the category into those that volunteer and those that are paid. Over time there has unfortunately been a great deal of dissention regarding abuse of these positions in cases of potential sexual molestation and physical abuse (Fink, 2004: 11). This meant that prejudices were in place regarding the use of male 'carers' in female homes. Again this problem arose due in part to misconceptions surrounding what men are supposed to be.
